<lj:music>american analog set - the postman</lj:music>

1) andy burned me the new M83. it is quite interesting. three fourths of it are really awesome and the addition of more vocals, louder guitars, and live drums is nice. the other one fourth i just can't process, it sounds like a different band. i think i am going to have to let this one grow on me.

2) collin meloy (from the decemberists, for those of you who don't know who i am speaking of) is playing schuba's tonight and it is sold out and i do not have a ticket. lame. but the full band is coming to the metro in march, so that is a plus.

3) the popular belief could possibly be put on a preshow ticket for a keane and redwalls show (not exactly sure how this show is connected because the place has like 5 venues connected to it and morbid angel is playing the same night at the eagles ballroom and keane is playing the eagles club. all the venues are connected but we are playing at the bar) at the rave bar in milwaukee. the show would be on sunday feb. 20 at around 6pm. the tickets are $15. drop me a line if you are interested. the place looks pretty cool so please check it out. www.therave.com

4) what is up with the killers. they freaking suck. but anyways, recording is going slow, steve's guitar amp is making rattlin' noises. so we have to figure that out. vocals next week (recording in the bathroom is so fun!)

5) i want to start a musical revolution in chicago where bands and the people that go see those bands could just chill out and not have to worry about being cool or accepted by some kind of indie rock scene. where people are free to create outside of the confines of conventional structure and make art that defines their being and not be carbon copies of trends or scenes. i want to have shows where the crowd surrounds the band and they are one. let people experience music and not just watch it happen. i have many ideas for this. if you are interested or you just have no idea what i am talking about and want to understand, drop me a line.

<lj:music>american analog set's "waking up is hard to do"</lj:music>

this year i listened to a ton of new music and even though i still probably didn't hear a ton of great albums i did hear some. and here they are...

1. the arcade fire's "funeral"

this band really just rocks my socks off. they came out of nowhere and just made a great album.

2. wilco's "a ghost is born"

i saw wilco live for the first time this year. amazing. this album took some time to settle in but once it did it blew my mind.

3. sufjan stevens' "seven swans"

one of the most beautiful records i have ever heard. the banjo plucks and strums and the boy girl harmony, great stuff.

4. devendra banhart's "rejoicing in the hands"

i bought this cd at a record store in frisco thinking that it might be good, boy was i in for a treat.

5. elliott smith's "from a basement on the hill"

this is a bit different for him but it works. i wasn't exactly what i wanted for his last album but that made me want to listen to it more and figure out everything that is in it. a beautiful mess.

6. the walkmen's "bows + arrows"

"the rat" is the cathiest song this year. great drunken vocals over messy rock n' roll soundscapes.

7. pedro the lion's "achilles heel"

the opening track "bands with managers" speaks so much truth. and "the poison" makes me want to die. not his strongest album as a whole but a few really great songs.

8. guided by voices' "half smiles of the decomposed"

a great swan song.

9. animal collective's "sung tongs"

when i saw this band with mum i thought they were a joke and then i heard this album and it changed my mind. they make the music you wish you could but are afraid to.

10. bjork's "medulla"

another real big shift from earlier work but a good one. some of the weirdest coolest structure changes i have ever heard.

yesterday was the best day of my life.

ate breakfast at brett's with him and nick.

went to the blue angel and had some good coffee.

drove down to clark and belmont.

ate dinner at clarkes. had our own little closed off area.

listened to yankee hotel foxtrot, summerteeth, and a ghost is born on the drive down.

drove around on lake shore drive.

entered the roosevelt theatre and chilled out in our 1st balcony seats.

nick bought a wilco shirt for $35.

we watched deerhoof play. the lead singer had some awesome dance moves.

then came WILCO!

they opened up with "hummingbird" while a huge screen behind them splashed a black and white film show that included the unfolding of the earth and hummingbirds. wilco then played the best show i have ever seen in my entire concert going life with a film for each song in the background that had things that went along with the songs. they played everything! one of the biggest highlights was the transition from "poor places" to "reservations" to "spiders (kidsmoke)" which nick totally called. other highlights included jeff tweedy's random in between talk about the guy recording the show (with a huge boom stand that jeff that was someone spinning plates)and his realtionship with his wife (they started playing "i'm the man who loves you" but then jeff stopped and wanted to do the start over again and said it had nothing to do with their relationship). they played every song off of yankee minus "kamera" and every song off ghosts minus "hell is chrome" and "less than you think". they played three songs off summer teeth and a few off older records. they did two encores packed with more songs including "i'm a wheel" and "ashes of american flags" and ended the night with "be not so fearful".

this was the best show that i have ever been to in my entire life. even better than radiohead. the sound was perfect, the band rocked and they played all the best songs. i was never bored for one second and i totally cried during "be not so fearful". i am changed.
